Axo Neurotech is hiring a mechanical and test engineering intern to build, integrate and test its thin-film neural devices, running benchtop characterization and supporting in vivo rodent studies.
Axo Neurotech develops biohybrid neural interfaces: living cells cultured on ultra-thin, flexible electrode arrays, so the cell layer integrates with surrounding nerve tissue while the electronics record, stimulate and transmit. The team is based in Palo Alto.
About the role
This internship leads hands-on work building, integrating and testing Axo's thin-film neural devices. It is a high-ownership role: you will help build and refine device fabrication, integration and reliability workflows rather than follow fully defined protocols, working with the microfabrication, biointerface, neuroengineering and preclinical teams.
What you will do
- Fabricate and handle thin-film electrode arrays, covering assembly, bonding and integration into test and implant hardware.
- Build and run benchtop test setups characterizing electrode and device performance, including impedance, mechanical and accelerated-aging tests.
- Prototype fixtures, enclosures and small mechanical parts in CAD, fabricating them by 3D printing and basic machining.
- Support in vivo studies in rodents: device preparation, surgical support, headcap handling and explant analysis.
- Help refine assembly, integration and reliability protocols, and document results clearly for reproducibility.
What they are looking for
- Hands-on experience building or testing hardware in a lab.
- Comfort working with animals, with rodent handling or surgical support a plus.
- Ability to operate independently in the lab, and experience adapting experimental protocols.
- Must be authorized to work in the US, with a minimum 12-week full-time commitment.
- Nice to have: thin-film electrodes, flexible circuits or microfabrication, implantable device familiarity, CAD and prototyping, and basic data analysis.
