Axo Neurotech is hiring an electrical engineer to build the data acquisition and test electronics behind its neural interface systems, spanning analog acquisition, stimulation, wireless power and firmware.

About the role

Axo Neurotech develops biohybrid neural interfaces: living cells cultured on ultra-thin, flexible electrode arrays, so the cell layer integrates with surrounding nerve tissue while the electronics record, stimulate and transmit. The team is based in Palo Alto.

About the role

This role builds core data acquisition and test electronics and firmware for Axo's next-generation neural interface systems. You will own the bring-up and firmware development of analog acquisition hardware, stimulation circuits, wireless data transfer and power delivery, working closely with biologists and microfabrication engineers.

What you will do

  • Build and optimize wireless data and power transfer systems.
  • Lead PCB schematic, layout, fabrication, assembly and bring-up of custom boards.
  • Architect unit and system-level testing and debugging across electronics and biointerfaces.
  • Design and build automated electrical test systems characterizing implant performance under simulated physiological conditions, including saline environments, temperature cycling and accelerated aging.
  • Develop test protocols for neural recording and stimulation electronics, power systems and wireless telemetry in biologically relevant conditions.
  • Create scalable test fixtures and benchtop setups enabling rapid, parallel testing of device variants.
  • Build automated test reporting and data analysis pipelines tracking device performance over time.

What they are looking for

  • 5+ years developing implantable medical electronics or consumer electronics.
  • Embedded system architecture and board-level bring-up, including RTOS-based firmware, low-power design, peripheral drivers, and protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, USB, CAN, BLE and Wi-Fi.
  • A track record shipping production firmware in C/C++ or HDL designs in Verilog or SystemVerilog.
  • Proficiency in PCB design tools such as Altium or KiCAD, and experience with wireless power and data.
  • Strong grounding in signal integrity, EMI mitigation and high-speed digital interfaces.
  • Nice to have: neurotechnology or medical device design, IEC 60601 familiarity, electrophysiology recordings, FPGA and HDL expertise, and an MS or PhD in electrical engineering.
