Axo Neurotech develops biohybrid neural interfaces: living cells cultured on ultra-thin, flexible electrode arrays, so the cell layer integrates with surrounding nerve tissue while the electronics record, stimulate and transmit. The team is based in Palo Alto.

About the role

This internship leads hands-on work in cell culture and in vitro biointerface development. It is a high-ownership role: you will help build and refine cell culture and interface workflows rather than follow fully defined protocols, working with the biointerface, neuroengineering, microfabrication and preclinical teams.

What you will do

• Independently run and maintain mammalian cell culture systems, whether primary cells, stem cells or differentiated systems.
• Develop and refine cell culture protocols in a fast-moving environment.
• Support development of biointerface systems, including cell and material interactions such as coatings, hydrogels and ECM.
• Design and execute in vitro experiments evaluating biological and electrical interface performance.
• Characterize cell behavior relevant to integration, signaling and stability.
• Document protocols and results to ensure reproducibility.

What they are looking for

• A current PhD student in bioengineering, neuroscience, molecular biology or a related field.
• Strong hands-on mammalian cell culture experience, with primary cells or stem cells required.
• Ability to operate independently in the lab, and experience adapting experimental protocols.
• Must be authorized to work in the US, with a minimum 12-week full-time commitment.
• Nice to have: cell and material interfaces, electrically active cell systems or electrophysiology, and cell engineering techniques such as viral transduction or CRISPR.
