Netholabs is a neuroscience and AI research company building biological foundation models grounded in large-scale neurobehavioral data. It designs custom hardware, high-density neural recording systems and tracking environments to capture petascale datasets, working towards whole brain emulation. The company has offices in London and San Francisco and a research site at the University of Sussex in Brighton.

About the role

This role joins the Brighton research team as an independent contributor driving experiments from design through analysis. You will design and run in vivo electrophysiology and behavioral experiments, work with large-scale neural and behavioral datasets, and partner with the ML team to translate what is learned about real brains and bodies into better foundation models.

In vivo electrophysiology and neural recording

• Design and run in vivo electrophysiology experiments in animal models.
• Develop and refine neural recording protocols and rigs alongside the hardware team.
• Ensure recordings meet the quality and fidelity standards the models are trained on.

Behavioral neuroscience and experimental design

• Design behavioral paradigms that generate rich, well-controlled datasets.
• Plan and oversee data collection sessions with technicians.
• Iterate on experimental design based on data quality and downstream modeling needs.

Analysis and translation

• Analyze large-scale neural and behavioral datasets and build computational models characterizing their dynamics.
• Partner with the ML team to translate biological findings into model design choices.
• Help define which neurobehavioral data and features are most valuable to capture.

What they are looking for

• A BSc or MSc in neuroscience or behavioral sciences with hands-on experimental research experience; a PhD with in vivo electrophysiology experience is preferred.
• Strong data analysis skills including Python or similar.
• Valued: large-scale or multi-modal neurobehavioral datasets, ML fundamentals, and prior work bridging neuroscience and AI.

The role is based on-site at the University of Sussex, Brighton.
